Method

Investigate intra- and inter-state economic connectivity through supplier-buyer address data; compare digitally sophisticated with traditional businesses with respect to revenue growth and analyse labour force demographics to build a picture of SME health, turning this into a single Index value.

Solution

MYOB dominates the Australian SME sector as a provider of financial software. The anonymised data it holds can provide useful insights into SMEs’ health and risk factors.
Geografia worked with MYOB over two projects to design and develop an index measuring different SME health aspects. The key themes were: connectivity (the supply chain connections linking SMEs across the country, between and within cities and towns); Digital-ready (whether online transactions accelerates or otherwise improves payments and revenue flows); labour force dynamics (the change in gender and age demographics in different sectors); and regional specialisation (how SMEs cluster in different regions and the risks/benefits of this for regional economic resilience).
All the metrics were used to identify risks associated with over-dependence and the benefits of more diversity in business relationships, market spread and workforce diversity. MYOB used the insights to promote the value of the service.
