Objective
Produce 20-year small area and LGA-level population and dwelling projections to inform systems planning for the region’s electricity retailer.
Method
To produce robust projections across numerous fast-growing small areas, the integration of three modelling components was required: a probabilistic population model, an economic model, and expert opinion.
Solution
A small area population projection project covering the territorial authorities of Selwyn and Christchurch City in New Zealand. Our regular project partners, Advanced Demographic Modelling composed a probabilistic population model, integrated with our economic model to produce 20-year population and dwelling forecasts at the LGA and SA2 levels. The data is being used by Orion Group (an electricity network owner) as part of its system planning for electricity provision in the region.
