Where are the seniors’ housing supply gaps in Santiago?

16 March 2020

Synopsis

As part of our collaboration with Santiago based firm Geoanalytics, we are in the middle of building a seniors’ housing land suitability app.

This is an updated version of a product we developed a few years ago for Greater Melbourne. It uses a large set of input data to identify the optimal locations for seniors’ housing, this time across the Greater Santiago area. The app factors in variables such as such as topography (it’s better to build seniors’ housing on relatively flat land); proximity to health services and public transport, and the presence of existing housing. It then runs calculates to rank and then visualise the prime locations for government and developers to provide housing for over 55s.

The Geoanalytics team spent considerable time in the field collecting data and filling in the gaps where it was missing, while back in Melbourne, Geografia focused on the GIS work.

We’re now busy building the front end. We aim to launch the site as a free service to anyone interested in housing in Santiago.

Once we’re done, we’ll be moving on to something even more interesting: a version of Spendmapp for Chile.
