City Life Analytics
UDIA NSW
In 2018, Geografia was one of eight finalists invited to present their proposal to the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s City Life Labs Pitch. Judged by three independent panellists and the UDIA audience, Geografia's City Analytics proposal was one of two winners (alongside the University of Wollongong). City Analytics was refined into the City Life Analytics web tool.
City Life Analytics visualises the most liveable parts of Greater Sydney based on the user’s personal preferences. City Life Analytics differs from most liveability tools in two ways. Firstly it incorporates environmental variables and property price information, overlaid with the more typical infrastructure and services data (such as proximity to parks). Secondly, it lets the user select a region of the City they interested in, then weight the significance of different features in order to find the most suitable suburb in that region according to their preferences. The application backend includes complex statistical modelling that calculates a base score for each suburb on metrics such as proximity, service provision access and environmental quality (including air and light pollution, green space and heat). It then factors in user weightings to rank suburbs.
Users can then see the most liveable suburbs in Greater Sydney according to how they define ‘liveable’. The ability to control the trade-off between features creates a unique and personalised version of liveability. As new data becomes available, the application will add new liveability layers. As the entire application is based on open source software, it will be possible for other developers to add new layers and insights.
